Gyógyszerfejlesztés refers to the process of discovering, developing, and bringing a new pharmaceutical drug to market. This complex and lengthy journey typically begins with basic research to identify potential disease targets and molecules that may affect them. Once promising compounds are identified, they undergo rigorous preclinical testing in laboratory settings and animal models to assess their safety and efficacy.

If preclinical studies show positive results, the drug candidate moves into clinical trials, which involve testing in human volunteers. These trials are conducted in several phases. Phase I focuses on safety and dosage in a small group of healthy individuals. Phase II evaluates efficacy and side effects in a larger group of patients with the target condition. Phase III further confirms efficacy, monitors side effects, and compares the drug to standard treatments in a large, diverse patient population.

Following successful clinical trials, the pharmaceutical company submits a comprehensive application to regulatory authorities, such as the European Medicines Agency (EMA) or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), for approval. If approved, the drug can be marketed and prescribed to patients. Post-market surveillance, known as Phase IV trials, continues to monitor the drug's long-term safety and effectiveness in the general population.
