The gyroscope is a device used for measuring or maintaining orientation and angular velocity. It is essentially a spinning wheel or disc in which the axis of rotation is free to assume any orientation by itself. This property allows a gyroscope to resist changes in its orientation, making it useful for stabilization and navigation.

The basic principle behind a gyroscope is conservation of angular momentum. When a spinning object, like a gyroscope rotor, is subjected to an external torque, it tends to precess rather than tilt in the direction of the torque. This precession is a slow rotation of the spin axis. The faster the rotor spins and the lighter its mass, the greater its resistance to changes in orientation.

Historically, gyroscopes were mechanical devices featuring a spinning rotor mounted on gimbals. These gimbals allowed the rotor to maintain its orientation regardless of the motion of the supporting structure. Such mechanical gyroscopes were crucial for early navigation systems, particularly in ships and aircraft, to provide stable references for heading and attitude.

Modern gyroscopes are often optical or electronic. Optical gyroscopes, such as ring laser gyroscopes and fiber optic gyroscopes, use the interference of light beams to detect rotation. These devices have no moving parts, leading to greater reliability and accuracy. MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) gyroscopes are also common, integrating sensing elements onto silicon chips. These are found in a vast array of consumer electronics, including smartphones, gaming consoles, and drones, enabling features like screen rotation and motion sensing.
