In Hungarian, gyomor refers to the stomach, with gyomrom meaning “my stomach” as a possessive form. The organ itself is a sac-like chamber within the upper abdomen and a key component of the digestive system.

Anatomically, the stomach connects the esophagus to the small intestine and is divided into the cardia, fundus, body, and antrum, with the pylorus opening into the duodenum. The inner lining has rugae when empty. The stomach wall consists of mucosa, submucosa, muscularis, and serosa, with muscle layers arranged for mixing movements. Blood supply comes from branches of the celiac trunk—the left and right gastric arteries and the gastroepiploic arteries. Innervation is primarily via the vagus nerve, with sympathetic fibers. Lymph drainage follows gastric and perigastric nodes.

The stomach stores ingested food and performs mechanical digestion through contractions that mix food with gastric juice. Gastric secretions include hydrochloric acid and pepsinogen from parietal and chief cells, mucus from surface cells, and intrinsic factor from parietal cells for vitamin B12 absorption. The resulting chyme is slowly released into the duodenum through the pyloric sphincter. Digestion and gastric emptying are regulated by neural input and hormones such as gastrin, secretin, and cholecystokinin, with feedback from the small intestine coordinating digestion.

Common conditions affecting the stomach include gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, gastric cancer, and gastroparesis. Helicobacter pylori infection is a major cause of gastritis and ulcers. Diagnostic methods include endoscopy, imaging, and biopsy; treatment varies with cause and may involve acid-suppressing medications, antibiotics for H. pylori, or, in some cases, surgery.
