Gyermektartás, often translated as child support, is a legal obligation in Hungary for parents to financially support their children after a divorce or separation. This financial contribution is intended to cover the child's essential needs, including food, clothing, housing, education, and healthcare. The amount of gyermektartás is determined by several factors, primarily the child's needs and the paying parent's income and earning capacity.

Hungarian law generally presumes that both parents have a responsibility to contribute to the child's upbringing, though the primary responsibility often falls on the non-custodial parent. Courts consider the standard of living the child would have enjoyed if the parents had remained together. If the paying parent's financial situation changes significantly, either the amount of child support can be reviewed and adjusted upwards or downwards.

The obligation to pay gyermektartás typically lasts until the child reaches the age of majority (18 years old) or, if the child is still pursuing higher education, until they complete it, but generally no later than 25 years of age. Failure to pay child support can result in legal enforcement actions, including wage garnishment or other measures to ensure compliance. The system aims to protect the child's welfare and ensure their financial stability regardless of their parents' marital status.
