gunsmiths

Gunsmiths are skilled tradespeople who specialize in the repair, modification, restoration, and manufacture of firearms and related equipment. They work with a wide range of weapons, including rifles, pistols, and shotguns, as well as historical and ceremonial arms. The role combines mechanical craftsmanship with an understanding of ballistics, safety, and legal requirements. Tasks may include diagnosing malfunctions, cleaning and maintaining parts, fitting and replacing components, refining finishes or stocks, and restoring antique firearms for collectors or museums. Gunsmiths may also produce custom parts, tune assemblies for better reliability, or advise owners on safe handling and lawful ownership.

Most work in small shops or as part of larger firearms manufacturers, police supply outfits, or museums.

Regulation and safety are central to the profession. In many countries and jurisdictions, gunsmiths who manufacture
