Gudstjenestene, the church services in Norwegian, are worship ceremonies conducted in Christian congregations. While practices vary between denominations and regions, they share common aims: to honor God, to hear and reflect on Scripture, to teach the faith, and to foster community among believers.

A typical gudstjeneste follows a liturgical or semi-liturgical format. It may begin with a processional welcome or call to worship, followed by readings from the Bible, a sermon or homily, prayers, and hymns or other music. In many churches the Eucharist (Holy Communion) is celebrated at least occasionally, and baptism may be conducted within or alongside the service. Offerings are often collected. The service is usually linked to the church calendar, with seasons such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter shaping readings, songs, and prayers.

There are denominational differences. Catholics and Orthodox Christians emphasize sacraments and liturgical rites; Lutherans and Anglicans focus on the proclamation of the Word and the Eucharist; Pentecostal and other Protestant churches may emphasize preaching and contemporary worship. In Norwegian usage, gudstjenesten most commonly refers to the Lutheran-evangelical tradition rooted in the Church of Norway, but the term can apply to services in other Christian traditions as well.

Practice and leadership vary. Services are typically led by ordained ministers, priests, or pastors, with involvement from lay readers, musicians, and other volunteers. Many parishes offer weekly Sunday services, while others provide midweek services or special festive occasions.

Historically central to Norwegian parish life, gudstjenestene have shaped community rhythms and language. In modern Norway and other Norwegian-speaking communities, services are conducted in the local language and reflect regional musical and liturgical preferences.
