Gudforældre are individuals chosen to sponsor a child at baptism within many Christian communities. The term encompasses gudmor (godmother) and gudfar (godfather). Their role is to support the child’s religious education and to serve as spiritual guides and role models, rather than to assume parental duties.

Parents typically select the godparents, who are usually present at the baptism and may participate in the ceremony. The number of godparents varies by denomination and local custom, but two or more is common. Selection is often done in consultation with the church and may reflect the family’s faith traditions.

Gudforældre do not have automatic legal rights or responsibilities toward the child. They are not legal guardians by virtue of being godparents. Legal guardianship is arranged separately through wills or family law and can vary by country. In many jurisdictions, the religious significance of the role is distinct from civil guardianship.

In modern practice, the role of godparents can be largely symbolic, especially in secular contexts. Some families emphasize ongoing mentorship and emotional support, while others maintain the traditional religious function. The concept is most common in Denmark and other Nordic countries, as well as in Catholic and Protestant communities worldwide, where the godparents are expected to contribute to the child’s spiritual upbringing and personal development.
