Groeping is the process of forming groups, organizing individuals or items into subgroups based on shared characteristics, aims, or constraints. In standard Dutch usage, the concept is more commonly referred to as groepering or groepsvorming; groeping is a less common variant or a term encountered mainly in loan translations.

In practice, groeping appears in multiple fields. In data analysis and statistics, grouping corresponds to clustering or partitioning: organizing observations into subsets so that members of the same group are more similar to each other than to those in other groups. It relies on similarity measures, distance metrics, and sometimes the specification of the number of groups. In education, groeping refers to organizing students into classes or subgroups by ability, age, or interests, with the aim of instructional efficiency or collaborative learning. In sociology and anthropology, grouping describes how people form social groups or categories, often studied to understand social structure and dynamics. In computer science, grouping can refer to data organization, indexing, or the design of modular systems.

Key considerations include how to define similarity or relevance, how many groups to form, how to ensure fairness and avoid bias, and how to preserve stability over time as conditions change. Ethical concerns arise when grouping by sensitive attributes.
