grievant

A grievant is a person who files a formal grievance or complaint, particularly within labor relations, civil service, or organizational settings. In unionized workplaces or agencies operating under a collective bargaining agreement, the grievant is the employee or member who contends that a contract provision or workplace policy has been violated, or that management has failed to meet obligations. The grievant may be represented by a union steward, attorney, or other designated representative through the grievance process.

In many jurisdictions, grievances follow a structured procedure. Steps often include a written grievance, an informal discussion, an investigation by the employer or a neutral party, and a formal hearing or arbitration if the issue is not resolved. The grievant's goal is to obtain remedies such as reinstatement, back pay, policy changes, or other corrective action. The grievant is generally entitled to timely handling, confidentiality, and fair treatment, as defined by the governing contract, policy, or law.

In non-union contexts, the term is still used to designate a complainant who raises concerns about policies, procedures, or treatment within an organization, though terminology may vary (for example "complainant" or "claimant"). The word is common in human resources, labor law, and administrative proceedings in several countries.
