Grawerka, or engraving, is the practice of incising designs, inscriptions, or textures into a harder surface such as metal, glass, wood, or stone. The term comes from the Polish noun grawer (engraver) and the verb grawerować. Engravings can be decorative, symbolic, or functional markings on objects.

Engraving methods range from traditional hand technique to modern automated processes. Hand engraving uses gravers or burins to cut lines. Mechanical engraving relies on rotating tools or pantographs and CNC machines. Laser engraving removes material with focused light to create marks. Chemical etching uses acids or electrolytic methods for designs. Some methods are combined to achieve shading or textures.

Materials commonly engraved include metals (precious and base), glass, wood, stone, ceramics, and plastics. Applications include jewelry personalization, inscriptions on trophies and plaques, markings on watches and firearms, coins and medals, and decorative signage. In jewelry and watchmaking, micro-engraving can create intricate motifs and serial numbers.

Tools range from handheld gravers to CNC and laser systems. The choice of method affects detail, depth, speed, material compatibility, and surface quality. Engraving requires precision, whether by steady manual skill or careful digital design and calibration for machine work.
