Graft copolymers are polymers in which side chains of one polymer are covalently attached to a different polymer backbone, producing a grafted or comb-like architecture. The main chain carries pendant side chains that may be chemically distinct from the backbone, yielding random, blocky, branched, or brush-like structures. This architecture enables a wide range of properties, including altered solubility, crystallinity, rheology, and compatibility in blends.

Synthesis of graft copolymers can be achieved by several routes. Grafting from attaches initiator sites on the backbone and grows side chains via polymerization, offering control over graft density and length. Grafting to links preformed side chains to the backbone through coupling reactions. Grafting through involves copolymerization of macromonomers that already contain side chains. Many syntheses use living polymerization methods such as ATRP, RAFT, ROMP, or anionic polymerization to achieve controlled architectures. Natural polymers like cellulose or starch are often grafted with synthetic chains to tailor properties.

Properties and applications are driven by the grafted segments. Graft copolymers can improve compatibility in immiscible polymer blends, act as rheology modifiers, or serve as components in coatings, adhesives, hydrogels, and membranes. They enable stimuli-responsive behavior when grafts are designed with responsive units (temperature, pH, or ionic strength). Examples include cellulose grafted with polyacrylates and starch graft copolymers; and polyolefin backbones grafted with polyacrylates or poly(ethylene oxide) segments.

Characterization typically uses NMR and FTIR to confirm chemistry, SEC/GPC for molecular weight and graft density, DSC/TGA for thermal properties, and rheology or microscopy for morphology.
