graanschuren

Graanschuren are buildings designed for storing grain on farms and rural estates, particularly in the Netherlands, Belgium and surrounding regions. They form part of traditional agrarian architecture and are often integrated with other farm buildings such as stables and barns.

The primary function is to protect harvested grain from moisture, pests and fire, while providing ventilation to prevent spoilage. Typical features include thick walls of brick, stone or timber, small upper openings or vents, and a floor that is raised or separated from the ground to avoid damp. Internal storage commonly consists of wooden bins or lofts arranged to maximize air circulation. Some graanschuren are elevated on stone or wooden staddle stones to keep grain off the damp ground.

Architectural variation depends on era and region. Graanschuren range from simple timber sheds to substantial brick structures. In Dutch and Flemish rural architecture they are often long, narrow buildings with a gabled roof, placed around the farmyard or at the edge of fields.

Historically, granaries were essential for food security and tax administration, and they played a central role in farm management. In modern times, many graanschuren survive as heritage buildings or are repurposed for residential, commercial or cultural uses, while some continue to serve storage in small-scale farming.
