Goblet-shaped refers to an object or structure that resembles a goblet or cup, characterized by a relatively broad, rounded upper portion that tapers into a narrower stalk or stem. The term is used across disciplines to describe a morphology where the widest part is at the top, akin to a drinking vessel, with a constricted base.

In biology, goblet-shaped is commonly applied to cells or glandular structures that have a cup-like apical region. In histology, goblet cells are a well-known example: single or multicellular mucus-secreting cells lining mucous membranes in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. They typically display a bulbous, apical region filled with mucin granules, giving them a distinctive cup-like appearance, with a basal nucleus. The mucus produced by goblet cells protects and lubricates epithelial surfaces. Under light microscopy, goblet cells may appear clear in routine staining and can be highlighted with specific stains such as periodic acid–Schiff (PAS) that stain mucins.

The description is general and can apply to other tissues or structures that share a similar cup-shaped profile. In pathology and anatomy, variations in goblet-shaped forms may reflect developmental stages, functional states, or disease processes, such as goblet cell hyperplasia, where increased numbers of goblet cells can alter tissue appearance and mucus production. While most usage is anatomical or histological, goblet-shaped can also describe non-biological objects that exhibit a similar morphology.
