Glucosetriggered is an adjective used to describe systems, devices, or materials that change state or function in response to glucose concentration. The term is applied across biology, materials science, and biotechnology to achieve controlled release, signal generation, or gene regulation tied to glucose levels. In some contexts, the more common hyphenated form “glucose-triggered” is used, but glucosetriggered conveys the same concept as a coined term.

Mechanisms of glucosetriggered systems vary. Biochemical approaches often rely on glucose oxidase (GOx), which oxidizes glucose to gluconic acid and hydrogen peroxide. The resulting chemical changes can induce swelling, deswelling, bond cleavage, or diffusion gate changes in a material, enabling glucose-triggered release or action. Boronate-based chemistries exploit reversible interactions between boronate groups and diols in glucose; binding alters charge or crosslink density, producing a glucose-responsive switch in material properties. In cellular or genetic contexts, glucose-responsive promoters or metabolic sensors can regulate gene expression or metabolic pathways in response to intracellular glucose or related signals. Some designs use pH changes or redox signals generated by glucose metabolism to drive the response.

Applications of glucosetriggered systems include drug delivery, where insulin or other therapeutics are released in response to rising glucose; biosensing, with glucose-responsive devices that signal concentration changes; and smart materials for tissue engineering or wound care that adapt to varying glucose conditions, particularly in diabetic settings.

Key considerations include selectivity for glucose over other sugars, biocompatibility, response time, stability, and manufacturability. In vivo applications require management of byproducts such as hydrogen peroxide and potential off-target effects.
