Glitzer is the German term for glitter, the small reflective particles used for decoration. They reflect light to create a sparkling appearance and are used in crafts, cosmetics, fashion, and stage effects.

Glitzer particles vary in size from a few micrometres to a few millimetres. They are commonly made from plastic films such as PET or foil-backed materials, often with a metallic or iridescent finish. Shapes include hexagons, circles, and squares, and finishes can be metallic, holographic, or transparent. Biodegradable variants use plant-based cellulose or biodegradable polymers.

The modern glitter industry emerged in the 20th century from cutting and coloring reflective film into small shapes. Industrial processes include printing and coating films, then shredding or punching into particles. Some glitters are labeled cosmetic-grade for use on skin and nails.

Glitzer is widely used in crafts, decorations, cosmetics, nail art, theatre and film makeup, holiday ornaments, and product packaging. In cosmetics, glitter may be used in lip gloss, eye shadow, and nail polish, subject to safety standards.

Environmental concerns focus on microplastic pollution, as glitter can persist in ecosystems and water systems. Biodegradable glitter using cellulose or bio-based polymers is marketed as an alternative, though actual environmental impact depends on formulation and disposal.
