It involves the transformation of raw materials, typically a mixture of silica, fluxes, and stabilizers, into a glassy layer under high temperatures. The primary component of most glazes is silica, which acts as a glass former. Fluxes, such as feldspar or alkali carbonates, lower the melting point of silica, allowing it to fuse at achievable kiln temperatures. As the temperature increases, the fluxes melt, dissolving the silica. This molten mixture then spreads over the ceramic surface.
