Glasjonomerfyllningar, often referred to as glass ionomers, are a type of dental restorative material used to fill cavities caused by tooth decay. They are composed of a powder containing fluoroaluminosilicate glass and a liquid consisting of polyacrylic acid. When mixed, these components react to form a hardened restorative material.

One of the key advantages of glass ionomers is their ability to release fluoride ions. This property helps to remineralize the surrounding tooth structure and can inhibit further decay, making them particularly useful in areas prone to cavities, such as the root surfaces of teeth or in children. They also bond chemically to tooth structure, meaning they adhere directly to the enamel and dentin without the need for extensive mechanical retention. This chemical bonding contributes to a good seal and can reduce the risk of leakage.

Glass ionomers are available in various formulations, including conventional glass ionomers and resin-modified glass ionomers. Resin-modified versions incorporate methacrylate monomers, which enhance their physical properties such as strength and wear resistance, and allow for light-curing for faster setting times. However, conventional glass ionomers are known for their excellent biocompatibility and fluoride-releasing capabilities.

While glass ionomers are less esthetic than composite resins due to their opaque, tooth-colored appearance, they are a valuable option for specific clinical situations. They are commonly used for filling non-load-bearing areas, as liners under other restorative materials, in atraumatic restorative treatment (ART), and for sealing pits and fissures. Their ease of use and anticariogenic properties make them a versatile material in restorative dentistry.
