Gjysmëpërçuese, in English semiconductors, are materials that have an electrical conductivity between that of a conductor and an insulator. This unique property allows them to be manipulated to control the flow of electric current, making them fundamental to modern electronics.

The electrical conductivity of a semiconductor can be modified by introducing impurities, a process known as doping. Doping with specific elements can create either n-type semiconductors, which have an excess of electrons, or p-type semiconductors, which have an excess of "holes" (the absence of electrons). The behavior of electrons and holes at the junction of n-type and p-type materials forms the basis of many semiconductor devices.

The most common semiconductor materials are silicon and germanium. However, compound semiconductors like gallium arsenide (GaAs) and indium phosphide (InP) are also widely used for specialized applications requiring faster electron mobility or specific optical properties.

The invention and development of semiconductor devices, such as transistors and diodes, have revolutionized technology. These tiny components are the building blocks of integrated circuits, also known as microchips, which are found in virtually all electronic devices, from smartphones and computers to medical equipment and automotive systems. The ability to miniaturize and control electronic functions on a chip has led to the rapid advancement of computing power and the proliferation of digital technologies.
