Gitane is the feminine form of the French noun gitan, meaning a Romani woman or gypsy. The masculine form is gitan. In French, these terms historically referred to people of Romani descent, but their usage can carry stereotypes and may be considered outdated or pejorative in some contexts. In contemporary writing, many prefer Romani or Roma when referring to the ethnic group, reserving gitane for cultural or literary uses or for women specifically.
