Giekkranen, known in English as jib cranes, are compact lifting devices designed for localized material handling in workshops, warehouses, and production lines. They consist of a vertical supporting column and a horizontal arm (the jib) that extends over the work area. A hoist is mounted on a trolley that travels along the jib, allowing the load to be raised, lowered, and moved horizontally within the crane’s reach. The jib can rotate about the column to provide a circular operating area.

Giekkranen come in several mounting configurations. Freestanding pillar jib cranes stand on a foundation and typically rotate a full 180 to 360 degrees. Wall-mounted or ceiling-mounted models attach to a wall or structural beam and offer a smaller, fixed rotation arc. The arm length, height, and lifting capacity vary by model.

Key components include the base or foundation, the vertical column, the rotating jib, the hoist and trolley, and control equipment (manual pendant, radio remote, or wired controls). Capacities usually range from a few hundred kilograms up to several tons, with spans and reach commonly between 1 and 10 meters, depending on design.

Giekkranen are valued for localized lifting, simple installation, and cost efficiency in repetitive handling tasks. They are not intended for full-scale material handling across large areas or very heavy lifts. Safety and maintenance require proper installation by qualified personnel, clear load ratings, regular inspections, lubrication, and adherence to applicable standards.
