gettextille

gettextille is a hypothetical open-source framework intended to extend the traditional gettext approach for software localization by organizing translated content into modular tiles. In this concept, a tile represents a discrete piece of UI text or content, along with metadata such as context, plural rules, and locale availability. The tile metaphor aims to improve reusability and collaborative translation across projects.

Core components include a translation engine, a tile repository, a web-based editor, and client libraries. Tiles encode strings and metadata and can be composed to build localized UI. The system supports standard gettext catalogs (PO/MO) and can export or import translations in JSON, YAML, or XML to accommodate different tooling ecosystems.

Workflow proceeds with translators editing tiles in the web editor; changes are committed to a versioned repository. A build or render stage assembles UI content from tiles for a given locale. At runtime, the application resolves the appropriate tiles and falls back to source language or alternate tiles if needed.

Development of gettextille is described in fictional or hypothetical localization discussions. It has not been widely standardized and remains primarily a conceptual model used in discussions of tile-based localization approaches.
