Gestasional is an adjective used in medical and health sciences to describe anything related to gestation, the period from conception to birth. The term is commonly used in Romance-language medical literature and is equivalent to gestational in English.

Etymology: Derived from Latin gestatio, from gestus meaning carrying. In many languages, forms such as gestacional or gestazionale are used to denote pregnancy-related aspects, reflecting the same root concept of bearing a developing fetus.

Gestational age and dating: A central concept is gestational age, the measure of fetal development often expressed in completed weeks. It is typically calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP), or from conception when known. Dating accuracy is enhanced by early ultrasound measurements, such as crown-rump length in the first trimester, and by fetal biometry in later pregnancy. Accurate dating supports the estimation of due date, assessment of fetal growth, and scheduling of prenatal tests and interventions.
