Gessováním is a Czech term that refers to the process of applying a gesso ground to a surface, typically for artistic purposes. Gesso is a white primer made from a mixture of gypsum or chalk, pigment, and a binder, traditionally animal glue. Its primary function is to create a smooth, opaque, and absorbent surface that is ideal for painting, particularly with oils or acrylics.

The application of gesso serves several key purposes. It seals the pores of the underlying material, preventing the paint from sinking in and losing its vibrancy. It also provides a consistent white background that can enhance the luminosity and color saturation of subsequent layers of paint.
