Gerüste, or scaffolds, are temporary structures used in construction, maintenance, and repair to provide elevated access and a stable work platform. They consist of interconnected elements that support workers, tools, and materials, while allowing safe movement around a work area. Typical designs vary in shape and complexity, from simple frame scaffolds to more modular systems.

Common configurations include frame scaffolds (Rahmen-Gerüst), which use welded frames connected by cross braces; tube-and-coupler scaffolds (Rohr- und Kupplungsgerüst), built from steel tubes joined with clamps; and modular system scaffolds (Systemgerüst) that use standardized components for rapid assembly. Mobile scaffolds with wheels are used for temporary relocation, while suspended or tied scaffolds are employed for large façades or rooftops.

Key components are vertical standards, horizontal ledgers, transoms, base plates or jacks, braces, and couplers; platforms with wooden or metal planks; guardrails and toe boards; and access elements such as ladders or stairs. Materials are typically steel or aluminum; steel offers high strength and durability, while aluminum provides lighter weight and easier handling. Many systems are galvanized or coated to resist corrosion.

Safety and standards: scaffolds are governed by national and international regulations. In Europe, standards such as EN 12811 and EN 1004 cover performance requirements, design, and use, complemented by national rules for training, inspection, and load limits. Assembly, modification, and dismantling should be performed by trained personnel; daily inspections for stability and damage are required; guardrails, midrails, toe boards, safe access, and proper anchoring are mandatory, and work may be limited by weather conditions.
