Georeferenssifilejä, often translated as georeferencing files or georeferenced files, are digital files that contain spatial information linking geographic coordinates to specific locations within the file. These files are fundamental in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other geospatial applications, enabling the precise overlay and analysis of different datasets.

The most common type of georeferencing file is a world file, typically a small text file with a .wld, .jgw, .pgw, or .tfw extension. A world file contains six values that define the transformation needed to map pixel coordinates in an image (like a TIFF, JPEG, or BMP) to real-world coordinates. These values represent the pixel size in the x and y directions, the rotation of the image, and the coordinates of a reference point. When a GIS software opens an image and finds a corresponding world file, it can automatically position the image correctly on a map.

Other forms of georeferencing information can be embedded directly within a file format, such as the georeferencing tags in GeoTIFF files. GeoTIFFs store spatial metadata directly within the image file itself, making them self-contained. These embedded georeferencing instructions can include coordinate system definitions, map projection information, and ground control points.

The primary purpose of georeferencing files is to ensure that geographic data is accurately placed in its correct real-world location. Without them, images or other spatial data would be displayed without any spatial context, making it impossible to measure distances, perform spatial analysis, or combine them with other geographically referenced datasets. This accuracy is crucial for applications ranging from environmental monitoring and urban planning to navigation and disaster response.
