Gender role refers to the set of expectations about how people should think, act, dress, and relate to others based on their perceived gender. Unlike biological sex, gender roles are social and cultural constructs that vary across societies and over time. They influence a wide range of behaviors, including occupational choices, family responsibilities, and emotional expression.

Across cultures, gender roles assign different duties to men, women, and non-binary individuals. Common examples include expectations that men are providers, women caregivers, or that certain professions are “masculine” or “feminine.” These norms also shape appearances and permissible expressions of emotion, assertiveness, or leadership.

Gender roles are learned through socialization processes in family, education, media, religion, and law. Children observe role models, imitate behavior, and receive feedback that reinforces or challenges norms. Institutions such as schools and workplaces may enact policies and cultures that reproduce or challenge traditional roles.

Rigid gender roles can constrain individual choice and contribute to gender inequality, including gaps in labor market participation, pay, and political representation. Critics view many gender roles as stereotypes that oversimplify human diversity. The perspective of intersectionality notes that race, class, sexuality, and disability intersect with gender to produce varied experiences.

Many societies have moved toward more flexible or egalitarian gender roles in recent decades, with increased female labor force participation, shared parenting, and recognition of gender diversity. Ongoing debates address balancing cultural traditions with equal opportunity, as well as the role of policy, media representation, and education in shaping norms.
