A gastroenterologist is a medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the digestive system. This system includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (colon), rectum, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.

Gastroenterologists undergo extensive training, typically completing medical school, followed by a residency in internal medicine, and then a fellowship in gastroenterology. This advanced training focuses on the complex workings of the digestive organs and the various conditions that can affect them.

Common conditions treated by gastroenterologists include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gallstones, pancreatitis, and liver diseases like hepatitis and cirrhosis. They also screen for and manage gastrointestinal cancers, such as colorectal cancer.

Diagnostic procedures commonly performed by gastroenterologists include endoscopy, colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and capsule endoscopy. These minimally invasive procedures allow for direct visualization of the digestive tract, enabling the identification of abnormalities and the collection of tissue samples for biopsy. Treatment plans may involve medication, dietary changes, lifestyle modifications, or surgical interventions, often in collaboration with surgeons.
