Gammasäädöt refers to the adjustment of gamma correction, a non-linear operation that encodes and decodes luminance or intensity in images and video signals. It is a crucial component in maintaining the visual appearance of images across different display devices and in various stages of image processing. The term "gammasäädöt" is Finnish and directly translates to "gamma adjustments."

Gamma correction is used to compensate for the non-linear relationship between the input signal and the output brightness of a display. Cathode ray tube (CRT) displays, for example, naturally exhibit a power-law relationship between the voltage applied and the light output, meaning that the brightness does not increase linearly with the signal. Gamma values, typically greater than 1, are applied to the signal to counteract this effect, ensuring that the perceived brightness is closer to the intended linear response.

In digital imaging and video, gamma is applied during encoding (e.g., when saving an image or video file) and decoded by the display. Standard sRGB color space, commonly used for web and consumer displays, has an implicit gamma correction. Adjusting gamma settings in software or on a display allows users to fine-tune the brightness and contrast of an image, especially in mid-tones. Incorrect gamma settings can lead to images appearing too dark, too bright, or having washed-out or crushed shadows and highlights. Photographers and videographers often adjust gamma during post-processing to achieve a specific aesthetic or to ensure accurate reproduction on various viewing platforms.
