Galsteen, also known as gallstones, are hardened deposits that can form in the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a small organ located beneath the liver that stores bile, a fluid that aids in digestion. Gallstones are typically made of cholesterol, bile salts, or a combination of both. They can vary in size from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball.

The exact cause of gallstone formation is not fully understood, but several factors are believed to contribute, including obesity, rapid weight loss, certain diets high in fat and cholesterol, and genetic predisposition. Women are more prone to developing gallstones than men. Age is also a factor, with the risk increasing after 40. Certain medical conditions like diabetes, liver disease, and Crohn's disease can also increase the likelihood of gallstone formation.

Many people with gallstones experience no symptoms. However, when gallstones block the bile ducts, they can cause severe pain, often in the upper right abdomen, which may radiate to the shoulder or back. This pain is known as a gallbladder attack. Other symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, indigestion, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes).

Diagnosis of gallstones is typically made through imaging tests such as an ultrasound. Treatment options depend on the presence and severity of symptoms. For asymptomatic gallstones, no treatment may be necessary. Symptomatic gallstones may be treated with medication to dissolve them, or through surgical removal of the gallbladder, a procedure called cholecystectomy. This is a common and generally safe surgical procedure.
