Fuzzylogicsäätö, or fuzzy logic control, is a control system method that uses fuzzy logic, a form of many-valued logic, to account for the inherent imprecision and uncertainty in real-world systems. Unlike traditional binary logic (true or false), fuzzy logic allows for degrees of truth, enabling it to represent and process information that is vague or ambiguous, similar to how humans reason.

The core of a fuzzy logic controller consists of several key components. First, input variables are "fuzzified" by mapping their crisp (precise) values to linguistic terms such as "cold," "warm," or "hot" using membership functions. These membership functions define the degree to which a value belongs to a particular linguistic set. Next, a set of "if-then" rules, known as the fuzzy rule base, are applied. These rules are typically derived from expert knowledge or empirical observation and relate the fuzzy input variables to fuzzy output variables. For example, a rule might be "IF temperature is cold AND humidity is high THEN fan speed is low."

The output of these rules is then aggregated and "defuzzified" to produce a crisp control signal that can be used to actuate a physical system. This process of fuzzification, rule inference, and defuzzification allows fuzzy logic controllers to handle nonlinearities and complex system dynamics that might be difficult to model with conventional control techniques. Fuzzy logic controllers are widely used in various applications, including appliance control (e.g., washing machines, air conditioners), automotive systems (e.g., anti-lock braking systems), industrial automation, and robotics. Their ability to provide smooth and robust control, even with incomplete or imprecise information, makes them a valuable tool in control engineering.
