Funduskameraga refers to the use or practice of photographing the interior surface of the eye, using a fundus camera. In Estonian, funduskamera means fundus camera, and funduskameraga denotes the instrumental form “with a fundus camera.” This term is used in clinical contexts to describe procedures, documentation, or imaging performed with such devices.

A fundus camera is a specialized ophthalmic imaging system that combines a low-magnification fundus examination with photography. It captures color images of the retina, including the optic disc, macula, and retinal vessels. Some models operate without pupil dilation (nonmydriatic), while others require dilating drops (mydriatic). Modern devices may offer autoalignment, stereo imaging, and high-resolution sensors, as well as features such as red-free or green-filter views to highlight different retinal structures. Newer systems provide ultra-widefield views that cover a larger portion of the retina.

Applications include screening, documentation, and monitoring of retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and retinal vascular disorders. Fundus photographs serve as baseline records, facilitate telemedicine consultations, and enable objective assessment of disease progression or treatment response. In some settings, fundus photography is paired with dye-based angiography or integrated with other imaging modalities like optical coherence tomography for comprehensive eye health evaluation.

Advantages of using a funduskamera include noninvasiveness, speed, repeatability, and the ability to archive images for longitudinal follow-up. Limitations can involve image quality affected by media opacities or small pupils, a restricted field of view in some models, and the need for proper technician training to obtain and interpret images.
