Fuelresistant is a term used to describe materials, coatings, and elastomeric compounds that resist degradation when exposed to hydrocarbon fuels. This property is critical for components that handle, store, or transport fuels, including automotive, aerospace, and industrial equipment, where exposure to gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, or biodiesel blends is common.

Typical fuel-resistant materials include fluorinated polymers such as fluorocarbon elastomers (FKM) and fluorosilicone elastomers, which exhibit low swelling and high chemical resistance to fuels. Plastics such as PTFE and certain fluorinated polyethers (e.g., PEEK, FEP) also offer excellent fuel resistance. Engineered coatings and metal surfaces with protective layers can further reduce fuel permeation and corrosion. Conventional nitrile elastomers (NBR) may be used for less demanding applications but often show greater swelling with aromatic fuels.

Performance depends on the fuel type (gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, biodiesel or ethanol blends), temperature, exposure duration, and pressure. Biodiesel and alcohol-containing fuels tend to be more aggressive, increasing swelling and permeation in some elastomers. In general, fluorocarbon-based materials provide the best fuel resistance, while elastomeric properties such as elasticity and sealability must be balanced with chemical resistance.

Testing and standards for fuel resistance include immersion or swell tests, changes in volume, mass, hardness, or tensile properties after exposure. Manufacturers publish compatibility charts and data sheets to guide material selection for specific fuels and conditions. Engineers may also rely on standardized laboratory methods to compare performance under defined test conditions.

Applications include seals, gaskets, O-rings, hoses, fuel lines, tanks, valves, and coatings in automotive, aircraft, marine, and industrial fuel-handling systems. While highly resistant variants exist, fuel-resistant materials can be more expensive or difficult to process, and long-term performance depends on proper selection for the intended fuel, temperature range, and mechanical loads.
