Fruitzetting, or fruit set, is the stage in plant reproduction when the ovary of a flower begins to develop into a fruit after successful pollination and fertilization. It marks the transition from flowering to fruit development and is a key determinant of potential yield in many crop species.

The process is driven by hormonal signals that originate after fertilization. Auxins and gibberellins, among others, stimulate the ovary to grow and differentiate into a fruit. In some crops, fruit set can occur without fertilization under certain conditions or with the use of growth regulators, a phenomenon known as parthenocarpy that can produce seedless fruits.

Fruit set is highly sensitive to a range of factors. Pollination success and fertilization are fundamental; without adequate pollinator activity or compatible pollen, fruit development may be limited. Environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and light affect pollen viability and ovary growth. Water and carbohydrate availability, nutrient status, and overall crop load also influence the likelihood that flowers will set and continue to develop into marketable fruits. Extreme heat, frost, or drought can cause premature flower drop, reducing fruit set.

In agriculture, managing fruit set involves practices to optimize pollination, protect blossoms from stress, and ensure adequate irrigation and nutrition. Crop managers may also employ thinning to balance fruit load and improve fruit size and quality. Fruit set is commonly expressed as the percentage of flowers that form fruits and serves as an early indicator of potential yield.
