The process is cyclical: water enters a crack, freezes and expands, then thaws, allowing more water to penetrate deeper. Repeated cycles of freezing and thawing can significantly weaken and break apart rocks, pavements, and other materials.

The effectiveness of frostsprängningar is dependent on several factors, including the presence of water, fluctuating temperatures that repeatedly cross the freezing point of water (0 degrees Celsius or 32 degrees Fahrenheit), and the material's susceptibility to cracking.
