Frihedsrettigheder, often translated as civil liberties or freedom rights, are fundamental protections that safeguard individuals from undue state interference and secure core aspects of personal autonomy. They form a core part of liberal constitutional systems and are designed to enable free and open societies where individuals can think, learn, express themselves, move, and participate in public life without fear of arbitrary punishment or control.

Core elements typically include freedom of speech, freedom of religion and belief, freedom of assembly and association, freedom of movement, and the right to privacy. In addition, frihedsrettigheder cover due process and a fair trial, protection of life and personal integrity, freedom from torture or cruel treatment, and, in many jurisdictions, the right to seek asylum. While these rights are foundational, they are not absolute; they may be subject to lawful restrictions that are necessary, proportionate, and non-discriminatory to protect public safety, order, or the rights of others.

Legal basis and enforcement usually arise from a nation’s constitution and from international law. In many countries, frihedsrettigheder are entrenched in constitutional text and are reinforced by human rights instruments such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and regional treaties like the European Convention on Human Rights. Courts and independent bodies adjudicate violations and provide remedies to uphold these freedoms.
