Framvagn is a Swedish term used to describe the front portion of a vehicle’s chassis that carries the front axle or front bogie and the associated suspension and steering components. The concept is used in both road vehicles and rail vehicles, and it is typically contrasted with bakvagn, the rear axle or bogie arrangement.

In road vehicles, the framvagn usually consists of a subframe or crossmembers that support the front axle, the steering gear, and the front suspension. Common suspension layouts include MacPherson struts and double wishbone designs, which are chosen for steering feel, ride quality, and packaging. In many modern cars, especially front‑wheel‑drive models, the powertrain may be integrated into the framvagn as well, with the transaxle and drive shafts connected to the front wheels. The framvagn must transfer vertical loads to the chassis while allowing controlled steering movement and damping of road irregularities.

In rail transport, framvagn refers to the front bogie or front truck of a railcar or locomotive. A bogie is a wheelset assembly mounted on a frame that can pivot relative to the vehicle body, aiding guidance and stability. The framvagn provides weight support, houses the wheelsets, includes suspension components, and often carries braking equipment. In some designs, traction or multiple-unit equipment is also integrated into the front bogie. Suspension systems in bogies aim to improve ride quality and track-keeping under varied speeds and loads.
