fotomotor
Fotomotor is a term used in biology and medicine to describe reflexive motor responses elicited by light. In clinical contexts, it most often refers to the pupillary light reflex, an involuntary constriction of the pupil in bright light that helps regulate the amount of light entering the eye. The photomotor reflex involves retinal photoreceptors, the optic nerve, the pretectal area of the midbrain, and the Edinger–Westphal nucleus, with motor signals carried by the oculomotor nerve to the iris sphincter muscles. The integrity of this reflex is used in neuro-ophthalmological examinations to assess both afferent and efferent pathways.
Beyond the pupil, photomotor responses can include other light-triggered motor outputs in some animals, such as
Origin and usage: The term combines Greek photos (light) and motor, and is used variably across disciplines.
