Common conditions evaluated by neuroophthalmologists include optic nerve disorders such as optic neuritis and ischemic optic neuropathy, visual field defects caused by strokes or tumors, cranial nerve palsies affecting eye movements, nystagmus (involuntary eye movements), papilledema (swelling of the optic nerve head due to increased intracranial pressure), and visual symptoms associated with systemic neurological diseases like multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. Diagnosis often involves a comprehensive eye examination, detailed visual field testing, imaging studies like MRI and CT scans, and sometimes evoked potentials to assess the speed of electrical signals in the visual pathways.
