Fortificationbuilding refers to the process of designing and constructing defensive works intended to protect people, assets, or territory from potential threats. It encompasses planning, engineering, construction, and ongoing maintenance of structures and systems that delay or deter attack, restrict access, or provide shelter and surveillance.

Historically, fortifications evolved with military technology: earthen ramparts and walls in ancient times; stone castles and bastioned fortifications in the early modern period; and reinforced concrete bunkers and integrated coastal or border defenses in the 19th and 20th centuries. Common elements include walls, towers or bastions, gates, moats or anti-vehicle obstacles, glacis, and firing positions; in seafaring contexts, batteries and seawalls; in civil contexts, bunkers and shelters.

Modern fortification building emphasizes not just thick walls but survivability under blast, redundancy of services, and integration with logistics and surveillance. Techniques include reinforced concrete, steel reinforcement, earthworks, gabions, and modular or prefabricated components; passive design features such as drainage, slope stability, and protection against progressive collapse; and active systems such as barriers, cameras, sensors, and secure communications. Planning considers terrain, climate, legal preservation requirements, and long-term maintenance.

Today most monumental or strategic fortifications are preserved as heritage sites or repurposed for civilian uses. Military doctrine emphasizes mobility and fortification in combination with deterrence and defense in depth rather than static works alone.
