Formatiivisen is the Finnish genitive singular form of the adjective formatiivinen, which corresponds to the English term formative. As an inflected form, it appears in constructions that mark possession, qualification or other genitive relations (for example formatiivisen palautteen = "of formative feedback"). The root adjective describes processes, experiences or elements that shape development, structure or performance rather than merely measuring its final outcome.

The adjective and its inflected forms are widely used in education and assessment (formatiivinen arviointi, formative assessment) to denote ongoing evaluation practices aimed at guiding learning through feedback, adjustments and diagnostic tasks.
