Foilbacks are a type of composite material in which a thin metallic foil is bonded to a backing substrate to create a single, functional surface. The backing can be paper, polymer film, fabric, or card stock, and the foil is typically aluminum, though other metals or metalized films may be used. The term is most commonly encountered in manufacturing, packaging, and security-related applications, where the foil layer provides reflectivity, color-shift, or added barrier properties.

In common use, foilbacks serve decorative and protective purposes. They appear on consumer packaging labels and premium displays to add shine and visual interest. They are also used to incorporate security or authentication features into documents, packaging, and currency-like materials, as the foil can carry microtext, holographic images, or other anti-counterfeiting elements. Additionally, foil-backed surfaces are found in some art prints, collectible cards, and specialty laminates where durability and a metallic finish are desired.

Manufacturing methods typically involve laminating or adhering a metal foil to the chosen backing. Bonding can be achieved through heat-activated adhesives, pressure-sensitive adhesives, or dispersion laminates. The final properties of a foilback material—such as flexibility, opacity, and adhesion—depend on foil thickness, backing material, adhesive system, and lamination conditions.

Variations in foilbacks include different foil alloys, thicknesses, and backing substrates, as well as combinations with protective coatings or scratch-resistant layers. While aesthetically appealing, foilbacks can increase production costs and, depending on materials used, raise environmental considerations related to foil disposal and recycling.
