Fly-by-wire (FBW) is a system used in modern aircraft that replaces conventional manual flight controls with an electronic interface. Instead of mechanical linkages connecting the pilot's control column and rudder pedals to the control surfaces (like ailerons, elevators, and rudder), sensors detect the pilot's input. These inputs are then processed by onboard computers, which in turn send electronic signals to actuators that move the control surfaces. This allows for more precise control, increased safety, and the implementation of advanced flight control laws.

The primary advantage of fly-by-wire technology is its ability to enhance aircraft performance and safety. The flight control computers can continuously monitor and adjust control surface movements, compensating for factors like turbulence, engine failure, or aerodynamic instability. This can prevent the aircraft from exceeding its structural limits or entering dangerous flight regimes. Furthermore, FBW systems can be programmed with various control laws, such as "normal law" for routine flight, "alternate law" in case of system malfunctions, and "direct law" which closely mimics traditional manual controls, providing redundancy and adaptability.

The development of fly-by-wire technology began in the 1960s, with early applications in military aircraft. Notable examples include the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon and the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber. The first commercial airliner to feature a full fly-by-wire system was the Airbus A320, introduced in 1988. Since then, the technology has become standard in most new large commercial aircraft, significantly contributing to the evolution of aviation safety and efficiency. While the underlying principles are complex, the goal remains to provide pilots with a safe and responsive means of controlling their aircraft.
