Fluoropolymers are a class of man-made plastics that contain fluorine atoms bonded to a carbon backbone. This unique chemical structure imparts a set of desirable properties, making them valuable in a wide range of applications. The strong carbon-fluorine bond is exceptionally stable, leading to high chemical inertness, resistance to heat, and excellent electrical insulation.

One of the most well-known fluoropolymers is polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), commonly recognized by its brand name Teflon. PTFE is famous for its extremely low coefficient of friction, meaning it is very slippery. Other common fluoropolymers include polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP), and perfluoroalkoxy alkane (PFA). PVDF is known for its excellent chemical resistance and mechanical strength, used in chemical processing equipment, wire insulation, and architectural coatings. FEP and PFA share many of PTFE's properties, such as high temperature resistance and non-stick surfaces, but are melt-processable, allowing for easier manufacturing into films, tubing, and molded parts.

The applications of fluoropolymers span numerous industries. They are essential in the aerospace, automotive, chemical, electronics, and medical fields. Their resistance to corrosive chemicals and high temperatures makes them indispensable for lining pipes, tanks, and processing equipment. In electronics, their insulating properties are crucial for high-performance cables and components. Their biocompatibility also makes them suitable for medical implants and devices.
