Fluoropolymer membranes are a class of membranes manufactured from fluorinated polymers, including PTFE, FEP, PFA, PVDF and related fluorinated ionomers. They are used for separation and selective transport in chemical processing, energy devices, filtration and microfluidic applications. The combination of chemical inertness, thermal stability and low permeability to many liquids and gases gives fluoropolymer membranes a distinctive performance in harsh environments.

Key properties of fluoropolymer membranes include high chemical resistance to acids, bases and organic solvents, broad service temperature ranges, and mechanical robustness. Many fluoropolymers exhibit low surface energy and nonstick characteristics, which can reduce fouling but can also necessitate surface modification or blending to improve wettability for certain filtration tasks. Some fluorinated ionomers provide ionic conductivity, making them suitable for electrochemical applications such as fuel cells and electrolyzers.

Manufacturing methods yield a range of membrane types. Dense fluoropolymer membranes are often produced by solution casting or extrusion and subsequent solvent removal. Porous fluoropolymer membranes are typically prepared by stretching and sintering PTFE to form microporous structures, or by phase inversion and other processing for PVDF and related polymers. Composite membranes combine a fluoropolymer support with selective layers to tune permeability and selectivity.

Applications span several fields. In filtration, fluoropolymer membranes are used for microfiltration and ultrafiltration of harsh chemicals and solvents. In energy, fluoropolymer ionomers like Nafion serve as proton-exchange membranes in fuel cells and water electrolyzers. They are also used as barriers, membranes for gas separation, and components in chemical processing equipment and sensors.

Challenges include higher material costs, processing difficulties due to poor solubility and melt behavior, and environmental considerations related to fluorinated compounds and end-of-life disposal and recycling. Ongoing research focuses on improving wettability, durability, and sustainability.
