Flukstäthet is a term used in Swedish-language parasitology to describe the density or abundance of flukes, a group of parasitic flatworms in the class Trematoda, within a host population or environment. The concept focuses on how many parasites are present and how they are distributed across hosts or samples.

In practice, flukstäthet is expressed using several related metrics. Prevalence denotes the proportion of hosts that are infected. Mean intensity refers to the average number of flukes among infected hosts, while mean abundance averages the number of flukes across all hosts, including those not infected. Units vary with context and may include individuals per host, flukes per gram of tissue, or flukes per unit area.

Measurement methods combine field sampling with laboratory diagnostics. Common approaches include necropsy to count parasites in organs, fecal egg counts, tissue digestion, and molecular assays. Parasite distribution among hosts is often highly aggregated, which is described with statistical dispersion parameters, frequently modeled with a negative binomial distribution.

Applications of flukstäthet include livestock health management, wildlife disease ecology, and aquaculture. Quantifying parasite density helps model transmission, assess the impact of interventions such as anthelmintic treatment, and evaluate environmental factors that influence transmission, such as water quality, grazing practices, and the presence of snail intermediate hosts required by many fluke species.
