Flotaatio, or flotation in mineral processing, is a separation technique used to concentrate valuable minerals by making certain particles hydrophobic so they attach to air bubbles and rise to the surface as a froth. In Finnish texts the word flotaatiossa denotes the stage or condition of being in flotation. The method is widely applied to sulfide ores, as well as to coal and certain industrial minerals.

The basic principle involves grinding ore to a fine size, then conditioning the slurry with chemical reagents. Collectors promote the attachment of target minerals to air bubbles, frothers help stabilize the froth, and modifiers adjust pH and selectivity. Air is introduced to create bubbles, and the particle–bubble aggregates rise to the top, forming a concentrate that is skimmed off, while hydrophilic gangue reports to the tailings. The process can be operated in batches or continuously and is often designed with multiple stages to improve recovery and grade.

Common equipment includes flotation cells, both mechanical and pneumatic, which provide mixing and bubble generation, and columns or Jameson-type cells used for finer particles and higher selectivity. Rougher, scavenger, cleaner, and regrind stages are typical in a flowsheet to maximize yield and purity. Column flotation, for example, offers longer residence times and stronger separation for fine particles, whereas mechanical cells handle larger throughputs and coarser feeds.

Applications span base metals like copper, zinc, and lead sulfides, as well as nickel, silver, and platinum ores. Flotation performance depends on ore characteristics, reagent chemistry, particle size, and operational control. Efficient flotation requires careful balance of grind size, reagent suite, and cell design, with ongoing optimization to adapt to ore variability and environmental considerations.
