Flokulants, also known as flocculants, are substances used to promote flocculation. Flocculation is the process by which dispersed colloidal particles aggregate to form larger, settleable particles called flocs. This process is crucial in various separation techniques, particularly in water and wastewater treatment.

Flokulants work by neutralizing the surface charges of the colloidal particles, which are typically negative. By reducing electrostatic repulsion, the particles can then approach each other closely enough for attractive forces to become dominant. Many flokulants are high-molecular-weight polymers, often with charged functional groups. These polymers can bridge between particles, physically holding them together. Common examples include polyacrylamides, polyamines, and polyDADMACs. Inorganic flokulants, such as aluminum sulfate (alum) and ferric chloride, also play a significant role, often acting as coagulants that destabilize particles before flocculation occurs.

The effectiveness of a flokulant depends on factors like the type and concentration of particles to be aggregated, pH, temperature, and the specific flokulant used. Proper dosage and mixing are essential for efficient floc formation. Once flocs are formed, they can be easily removed from the liquid phase through sedimentation, flotation, or filtration. This significantly clarifies the liquid and removes suspended solids. Flokulants are widely applied in drinking water purification, industrial effluent treatment, mining operations, and paper manufacturing.
