Flerplatekløtsjer, commonly known as multi-plate clutches, are a type of clutch system that utilizes multiple friction discs to engage and transmit power between a driving and a driven shaft. Unlike single-plate clutches, which rely on a single friction surface, multi-plate designs increase the total surface area available for friction. This larger surface area allows for a greater torque capacity within a given diameter, or enables a more compact clutch unit for a specific torque requirement.

The operation of a flerplatekløtsj is similar to a single-plate clutch. When the clutch is engaged, pressure is applied to a stack of alternating friction plates and steel plates, clamping them together. This friction causes the driving plates, which are connected to the engine or power source, to spin the driven plates, which are connected to the transmission or output shaft. Disengaging the clutch releases the pressure, allowing the plates to rotate independently and interrupting the power flow.

Flerplatekløtsjer are often found in applications where high torque is required or where space is limited, such as in high-performance sports cars, motorcycles, and some industrial machinery. The increased friction area can also lead to improved heat dissipation, making them more durable under heavy use. However, multi-plate clutches can be more complex and expensive to manufacture than single-plate systems. They also typically have a slightly different feel during engagement due to the multiple friction surfaces.
