Flatbeds are a type of freight-hauling platform characterized by a flat, level deck with no permanent sides or roof. They are used on both rigid trucks with flatbed bodies and on flatbed trailers that are pulled by separate tractors. The deck is usually constructed from steel, aluminum, or reinforced wood and is supported by a robust frame with anchor points along the edges. Many flatbeds use stake pockets and removable side rails to provide optional containment for certain loads.

Applications: Flatbeds are ideal for heavy, bulky, or irregular loads that do not fit inside enclosed bodies, such as lumber, steel coils, pipes, machinery, construction equipment, and large prefabricated components. The open design enables easy loading and unloading with forklifts, cranes, or pallet jacks, and allows for long items to overhang the rear or sides when allowed by law.

Load securement and safety: Because there are no walls, securing cargo is critical. Shippers use tie-downs, straps, chains, and binders attached to anchor points or stake pockets, with edge protection to prevent strap damage. Loads may need tarps in certain climates, and overhang or width must comply with local height, weight, and width restrictions; oversize permits may apply. Proper weight distribution and securing reduce the risk of shifting during transit.

Limitations and variations: Open decks expose cargo to weather; some flatbeds are equipped with features to aid loading and unloading, such as tilting mechanisms or adjustable rails. Specialized flatbeds exist for particular cargo types, and fleets may use different deck heights and load ratings depending on regional requirements and typical applications.
