Fjäderutlösning, also known as feathering or quill stubbing, refers to a phenomenon primarily observed in birds where the feathers on the wings and tail become worn or damaged, affecting their ability to fly efficiently. This wear and tear is a natural process that occurs due to the constant use of feathers during flight, preening, and other activities.

The primary cause of fjäderutlösning is abrasion. As a bird flies, its feathers rub against the air and against each other, leading to gradual wear of the barbules, the tiny structures that interlock to form the smooth surface of a feather. This interlocking is crucial for maintaining the feather's aerodynamic integrity. When these barbules are damaged, the feather loses its smooth contour, creating drag and reducing lift.

Environmental factors can exacerbate fjäderutlösning. Exposure to harsh weather conditions, such as strong winds, rain, or snow, can accelerate feather damage. Similarly, nesting materials and the general environment can also contribute to wear.

While some degree of feather wear is normal and is replenished during molting, excessive fjäderutlösning can significantly impact a bird's survival. Birds with severely damaged feathers may struggle to fly, making them more vulnerable to predators and less able to forage for food or migrate.
